With fifteen dancers, musicians, and actors, accompanied by a live orchestra, Gintersdorfer and Klaßen showcase their largest performance to date: a unique dance show that takes as its starting point the life of legendary thief and murderer-for-hire John Pololo from the Ivory Coast, who in the 1980s and 1990s became a subversive artistic figure, inventing sayings and dance styles still to be found on the streets of the Ivory Coast today. In the show, the Pololo movement comes into contact with German punk and queer urban club culture – the street dance of Abidjan mixes with internet dance crazes such as twerking, crumping, and voguing, with strong stances and a self-aware DIY attitude the standard and anti-authenticity the artistic principle. With Not Punk, Pololo, Gintersdorfer/Klaßen – two of the guiding lights of the international dance scene – present a game of signs and attitudes that encourages the clash of competing dance styles and ways of thinking.
